  • Our Take: Isa Chandra Moskowitz is at it again!  She wrote the Veganomicon and Vegan Brunch....and now we get Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar!   She joins co-author Terry Hope Romero to bring us some great new Vegan cookie recipes.

I know that everyone loves cookies.  Its just a fact.  You LOVE COOKIES!  You know that you do.  Only, we all want to watch our weight, at least to some degree.  Enter the Vegan cookie.  Its an amazing little invention that generally lowers the fat content drastically.  Now, if you haven't had proper Vegan cooking, maybe you don't dig it.  These recipes are the real deal.  My wife and I selected several of them to try out and we whipped up some delicious cookies.

The recipes in the book are very easily laid out and not difficult to follow.  Most of the recipes even include a "morsels" tidbit that gives you an extra tip, such as how to make the recipe even more healthy for you.  This is a great little book to add to your recipes.  Our taste buds, and our guts, highly recommend it!

So Long as Men Can Breathe: The Untold Story of Shakespeare's Sonnets Book Review

So Long as Men Can Breathe:
The Untold Story of Shakespeare's Sonnets Book Review

About the Book: In this lively, fascinating account of the publication of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, noted biographer Clinton Heylin brings their convoluted history to light, beginning with the first complete appearance of the Sonnets in print in May, 1609. He introduces us to the “unholy alliance” involved in this precarious enterprise: Thomas Thorpe, the publisher, a self-described “well wishing adventurer;” George Eld, the printer, heavily embroiled in large-scale pirating; William Aspley, the prestigious bookseller, who mysteriously ended his association with Thorpe soon after. Leaving the calamitous world of Elizabethan publishing, Heylin goes on to chart the many editions of the Sonnets through the years and the editorial decisions that led to their present configuration. Passionate, astute, and brilliantly entertaining, the result is a concise and vivid history of perhaps the greatest poetry ever written.

Our Take: Our views of Shakespeare these days are dim.  Why do I say this?  Shakespeare is taught in school, its in old English and its just not terribly interesting to the average person.  The fact is, William caused a lot of controversy back in his day.  He was no angel.  Shakespeare's Sonnets are amongst the most interesting of his works, simply because of the confusion and controversy that surrounds them.

Author Clinton Heylin gives us a great account of life and the state of manuscript publishing back in the 17th century.  Apparently bootlegging was a big issue back then, much like the downloading of music and movies is today.  The sonnets were apparently not meant to get out the way that they did, if at all!

The reading in this title is surprisingly easy, considering the thick language of the subject matter.  Its almost a great detective novel, as Heylin uncovers facts and information previously unkown to the lay reader.  This book is a great read.

Vegan Lunch Box around the World Book Review

Vegan Lunch Box around the World Book Review

Book Synopsis: Vegan Lunch Box Around the World offers a delicious array of meat-free, egg-free, and dairy-free lunches that will take you on an adventure across the globe. The book includes balanced international and regional American menus with 100 recipes from Ratatouille to Moroccan Tagine, New England Chowder to a Japanese Bento Box. With quick and easy recipes, fruit and veggie ideas for even the pickiest eaters, and an allergen-free index, Vegan Lunch Box Around the World is essential for every family raising healthy kids—and for anyone who packs a lunch.

Our Take: Its funny how the perception of vegan and vegetarian food has been changing over the past few years.  It used to be that only extremely passionate vegans would be into it and most people thought of it as inedible garbage.  Its been revelealed over the past few years, as a health consciousness sweeps back over the nation, that vegan food is not only delicious and can open up your otherwise limited taste palet, but its also very healthy.

In the middle of this expolosion has been an escalation in the amount of vegan cookbooks.  How does one decide which to use?  Well, we found a great one here in the Vegan Lunch Box Around the World.  I've eaten vegan for many years.  I'm not a strict vegan, but I'm a vegetarian and I eat vegan as much as possible.  I find the variety of tastes to be delicious and exciting.  When my wife and I cracked open this new book of recipes from all around the world, I wasn't sure what to think.  What we found were international recipes that promote health and well-being.  Its so easy for kids to get stuck into a rut, but with a book like this you can expand their minds about what taste is and really give them a nice variety of foods.

It does take some time to cook most of the recipes in this book.  The title Vegan Lunch Box may have you thinking it'd be like making a school lunch, and thats just not so.  It does take some preparation time the night before, but its well worth it to ensure that your children are well-fed and healthy.  While everyone else is eating hamburgers and chicken nuggets, yours can be delighting in cuisine that will enrich their body and their mind.  The habits we gain in childhood stay with us our entire lives, so now is the time to learn.

This book is great on many levels.  It not only has exotic recipes, but it also carries a lot of allergin-free cooking information.  You don't need to have children to enjoy this cook book, anyone can make and enjoy these recipes.  They would also be great to make yourself for taking to work!  We highly recommend this one, its unique and really stands out from many of the other vegan books on the market.
