The Joker: A Visual History of the Clown Prince of Crime Book Review

The Joker: A Visual History of the Clown Prince of Crime Book Review

About the Book: A comprehensive look at the greatest comic book villain . . . ever. Since his first appearance in 1940’s Batman #1, the Joker stands alone as the most hated, feared, and loved villain in the DC Universe. Though his true origins may be unknown, the Clown Prince of Crime’s psychotic appearances in hundreds of comic books has shaped the way we look at Batman, comic books, and ourselves. Indeed, a hero is only as good as his nemesis, so the Joker’s heinous crimes, including murdering the second Robin and paralyzing Batgirl, have elevated Batman to the highest levels of crime-fighting, and we, the readers, to the finest levels of quality pop-culture entertainment.

The Joker is the first retrospective chronicling one of the most groundbreaking and game-changing villains of all time, and contains images from his more than seventy years in comics by comic book artists and writers such as Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, Dick Sprang, Grant Morrison, Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns, Alan Moore, Brian Bolland, Brian Azzarello, Bruce Timm, and Paul Dini. Also included are images from his various film, television, animated, and video game incarnations, such as the timeless interpretations by Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger, who won his posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight. This book is a must-have for fans and anyone who wants to die laughing.

Our Take: This new book is the first time we get a focus spotlighted on Batman's #1 villain...the Joker.  Prolific author Daniel Wallace does a masterful job of peppering in dynamic and colorful imagery amidst an in-depth and informative history of the clown prince of crime!  The book covers his inception..all the way through the movies and cartoons to the present day.

The images are taken from comic book pages, sketches, animation cels and other work from artists, such as Tim Sale, Sam Keith and Jim Lee.  I have a pretty extensive knowlege of the Joker and I learned a few things from this great behind the scenes look at the greatest comic book villain of all.  The introduction by Mark Hamill is a great touch in this high-end hardcover book from Universe publishing.  The book retails for around $50, but its well worth it!   The cover features a dust jacket with "Killing Joke" artwork that wraps around a purple and green "Ha Ha" cover.

A lot of books are released each year that spotlight Batman, but this rare new look that focuses on the Joker is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever Book Review

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever Book Review

About the Book: Greg Heffley is in big trouble. School property has been damaged, and Greg is the prime suspect. But the crazy thing is, he’s innocent. Or at least sort of.

The authorities are closing in, but when a surprise blizzard hits, the Heffley family is trapped indoors. Greg knows that when the snow melts he’s going to have to face the music, but could any punishment be worse than being stuck inside with your family for the holidays?

Our Take: Diary of a Wimpy kid is an absolute literary phenomenon.  Its spawned six main books, a "do it yourself book" and a movie diary.  There have been two films based on the books that have each made a ton of dough!  Now, just in time for Xmas, we're given the gift of the sixth Wimpy Kid book: Cabin Fever.  This highly anticipated book is finally here!  I say highly anticipated, because for the past six months my eight year old has been constantly nagging me about it, lol!  He loves these books beyond words and its exciting to see something..anything..getting kids to read in a post-Harry Potter era.

Author Jeff Kinney really understands the dynamic of the comic.  He has taken images, crude though they may be, and incorporated them into the pages in such a way that its fluid and natural.  He tells his story with image and words, which isn't as easy as it sounds.  This book is a fantastic new edition to the Wimpy Kid series.

Have Yourself a Very Vintage Christmas: Crafts, Decorating Tips, and Recipes, 1920s-1960s Book Review

About the Book: In her newest volume, Susan Waggoner recaptures the magic of Christmases past with the vintage crafts projects readers have been craving. Inspired by the most sought-after treasures from the 1920s through the 1960s, Waggoner recreates a tempting array of decorations and provides step-by-step instructions that allow anyone to deck their halls with cellophane wreaths, glittered glass ornament balls, beaded bell garlands, and whimsical, tinsel-bedecked treat cups. Nostalgic bonus art throughout provides a host of images to use in greeting cards and photo holders. And to keep spirits merry and energy flowing, Waggoner includes a sampler of easy-to-make candy recipes, from Mackinac Island Fudge to old-fashioned soft caramels.

Our Take: This book has quickly become a favorite in our home.  Collecting vintage decor has become a huge trend lately from flea markets and the net to even product in mainstream stores.  This book focuses on a lot of areas, but does give an amazing amount of information on the decorations of the past.  If you are interested in collecting vintage Xmas you can learn how to date your pieces and learn what items were out in what era.   The book also includes old recipes and scans of old Xmas cards in the back.  Its an absolutely fabulous and informative title that we highly recommend!

Draw DC Universe: Learn to Draw the Heroes and the Villains Book Review

Draw DC Universe: Learn to Draw the Heroes and the Villains Book Review

About the Book: This book is a complete how-to-draw package, jammed with expert tips and techniques, tons of practice space, and of course, a universe of DC heroes and villains. The draw-right-in-it book comes with everything you need: a sketching pencil, a drawing marker, artist’s pencils in six colors, a big block eraser to fight crimes against the page, stencils, and translucent overlays scattered throughout for can’t-fail tracing activities.

Our Take: We love Dc Comics here at Book Legion and over at our network site Legions of Gotham.  This book was brought to our attention not from a press release or an email, but by my son.  We were walking through a local craft store and my son ran, not walked, ran up to me waving this book.  Well, I was instantly hooked, so we partnered with the fine folks at Klutz to check it out and shrare our results with you all.

I love to draw.  I drew during school, I drew during work and in my adult life I'm a gallery exhibiting painter.  My first love is comic book style art, but I must confess I've never been all that great at it.  Well, let me tell you this Klutz book changed all that for me!  Firstly, my son did a few drawings..he started with the simple line and shape drawings in the book and followed their step by step instructions through to the final detailed drawing and it was amazing.  He has talent as it is, but this book helped him learn and understand things about bodies and porportion that set his skill level up quite a few notches.  So, I tried it out and it did the same for me, I'm embaressed to say, since this one is geared towards kids, lol.

This book rocks.  It comes with colored pencils that you can utilize in your drawings and a marker that we found didn't work so well, but that was inconsequential.  The characters you can draw range from Batman and Supes to Scarecrow, Robin, Flash, Green Arrow and more!  This book is great for collectors and a must for any adult or kid that wants to improve their comic book style drawing skills!

This book comes With: pencil, drawing marker, 3 double-tipped pencils in 6 colors, block eraser, 2 pages of stencils

The Conscious Catwoman Explains Life On Earth Book Review

About the Book: This book contains the secrets of her nine plus lives.  The how...to end all HOW TO books!

Our Take: Julie Newmar is an amazing actress.  She is one of my personal favorites...you see I'm a Batman maniac.  I mean that in the worst way!  lol.  Julie Newmar is, of course, most famous for her role as the sexy and classy Catwoman in the 1966 Batman television show.  Ms. Newmar has had a very prolific career since and has become something of a cultural icon.  You may have seen the film "Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar.   This book is full of Julie's thoughts on life...everything from writing, health, wealth, parents and pursuing your dreams.  She has very practical and positive views on how to live your life and its really refreshing to read.  The book is a light read, clocking in at just over 70 pages and with a very loose format that includes pics of the actress and spaced out quotes.  The very last chapter, dedicated to Julie's son, is absolutely touching and really shows her character as a mother and a person.  This book is fantastic and I recommend it to all Batman fans and not just that, but people in general.  This book would make a lovely gift and should definately be remembered this Xmas.  Something else fun?  For an extra fee on Julie's website you can have the book autographed and personally inscribed to yourself or someone else!

A Miscellany of Murder Book Review

A Miscellany of Murder: From History and Literature to True Crime and Television, a Killer Selection of Trivia Book Review

About the Book:
Why do they call Adelaide, Australia the "City of Corpses"?
How many people did Agatha Christie kill with her pen?
What was Jack the Ripper's supposed occupation?
There's nothing like a little murder to challenge the dark side of your brain. This dastardly little volume is organized by the seven deadly sins, giving you all the gumshoes, guns, and gore you need to explore the sinister side of human nature, including:

  • The worst villains of all time--from Hannibal Lecter to Charles Manson
  • The bloody truth about forensics
  • Weaponry to die for
  • Private dicks, dangerous dames, and dubious characters
  • The most puzzling unsolved mysteries
  • Who's really gotten away with murder
From amateur sleuths to serial killers, this murderous miscellany of crime--both real and imagined--is just the thing for a dark and stormy night.

Our Take: This book is a very light read.  Each page is a bit disorganized and has random facts, quotes and information on characters in film and tv in addition to real life murders.  The layout is a little jarring and erratic with factoid and triva question after quote and it really doesn't have much of an order.    I have a lot of trivia and informational books on murder, both fictional and true crime, and this one isn't on the top of my list.  I think this one could definately appeal to some, but you should probably flip thorugh it first.

Tony Hawk's 900 Revolution Volumes 1 and 2 Book Reviews!

About the Volume One: Omar Grebes never slows down. When hes not shredding concrete at Ocean Beach Skate Park, hes kicking through surf at Imperial Beach or scarfing down fish tacos from the nearest roadside shop. Soon, his wiry six-foot frame and live-or-die lifestyle catch the attention of big-name sponsors. But one of them offers Omar more than he bargained for . . . a chance to join the mysterious 900 Revolution and claim a piece of history.

About Volume Two: When you skate in New York, its all about getting creative, and fourteen-year-old Dylan Crow considers himself a street artist. You wont catch him tagging alley walls. Instead, he paints the streets with his board. He wants to be seen grinding rails in Brooklyn, doing ollies at the Chelsea Piers, and launching kickflips in Manhattan. But when Dylan starts running with the wrong crowd, his future quickly becomes a lot less certain . . . until he discovers a new destiny.

Our Take: The 900 Revolution is a great new junior novel series that carries the Tony Hawk name.  Both of the books are about young kids that live for skateboarding.  They are great for ages 10 and up, although my 9 year old had absolutely no difficulty in reading and enjoying these cool new books.  They read well and are interjected with some cool graphics and several comic book style pages.   The kids are faced with moral dilemas and different paths and both end up joining the mysterious 900 Revolution club that helps to set them on the correct path!  These books are great and safe reads for your tweens.

And when the SCARLET SPEEDSTER chases them, they disappear into a shiny storefront window without crashing. Theres only one thing left to do: FLASH has to zoom through the looking glass himself. On the other side, he doesnt believe his eyes. He finds a dazzling kingdom ruled by the mesmerizing menace of the MIRROR MASTER ! Our Take: This new book from Stone Arch books is based on the Timm-verse version of the Flash character.  We see the speedster face one of his most prolific villains, Mirror Master!  This book is fun for kids, because it has a lot of text, but its all interject by great animation style pictures and fun effects.  The end of the book features some talking and writing points, which makes this a great book for parents to help their kids learn or for educators to use in the classroom.  This one is a definiate win!

The only way out of this sticky situation is for GREEN LANTERN to team up with his former foe. Can the two warriors work together or will this epic battle become an epic fail?

Our Take: Green Lantern fans unite!  This new kids book is absolutely dynamic!  Its simple text interjected with fun word effects and animated-style pictures.   This book, the Web of Doom, was written by Michael Steele, who has a proud history in writing children's books, and illustrated by Dan Schoening.  The book is done in the more traditional Dc animated style and definately appealed to me right away.  The kids loved the story, especially since we just watched the live action and Dc Universe animated Green Lantern movies.  These Hal Jordan Lantern tales are sure to please any fan and their kids!  The book comes with a handy glossary in the back that will help you go over some of the more difficult words with your kids and even a bio for one of the lesser-known characters in the story!   This one is absolutely fantastic.

Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film Book Review

Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film Book Review

About the Book: For over thirty years, audiences have been simultaneously captivated and appalled as the spaceship Nostromo is invaded and its crew stalked by a terrifying parasitic creature. From the gore of the infant alien bursting from Kane’s chest to the mounting claustrophobia as Ripley discovers the monster has followed her into the escape shuttle, Alien is a chilling masterpiece.

Now, Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film opens a portal into the making of this legendary film, tracing its path from embryonic concept to fully fledged box office phenomenon.

Featured herein are director Ridley Scott’s own annotated storyboards, Polaroids and script pages; the elegant but disturbing concept artwork of H.R. Giger; sketches and construction blueprints for the Nostromo; costume designs by Moebius; a treasure trove of never-before-seen photographs of the cast and crew; and ten meticulously reproduced artifacts, enclosed in vellum envelopes, for readers to remove and examine more closely.

Fully authorized and illustrated throughout, Alien Vault is the ultimate tribute to a movie that changed cinema forever.

Our Take: The Alien franchise is without a doubt the coolest and most involved sci-fi franchise in history.  It all started back in 1979 with Ridley Scott's Alien.  Directors since have included James Cameron and David Fincher, but that original movie by Scott was without a doubt the launchpad for the epic franchise.  This new book, The Alien Vault, is the ultimate fan experience.  I never thought of all the films that Alien would get the star treatment like this, but man am I glad it did!

The vault is a hardcover book with a nice slipcase that features the iconic image of the alien egg with the green burst coming from the crack.  The book opens up to reveal page after page of in-depth and detailed information about the film, along with reproductions of various affirmia and collectibles from the era.   This book is without a doubt our favorite book of the fall and is a MUST have for any respectable sci-fi nerd!  This one is a complete WIN!
