Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls Book Review

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls Book Review

About the Book: With more than one million copies in print, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was the surprise publishing phenomenon of 2009. A best seller on three continents, PPZ has been translated into 21 languages and optioned to become a major motion picture.

In this terrifying and hilarious prequel, we witness the genesis of the zombie plague in early-nineteenth-century England. We watch Elizabeth Bennet evolve from a naïve young teenager into a savage slayer of the undead. We laugh as she begins her first clumsy training with nunchucks and katana swords and cry when her first blush with romance goes tragically awry. Written by acclaimed novelist (and Edgar Award nominee) Steve Hockensmith, Dawn of the Dreadfuls invites Austen fans to step back into Regency England, Land of the Undead!

Our Take: Awhile back we reviewed the Heirloom edition of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.   Quirk has really stumbled upon a fantastic new genre with these mash-up stories.  They basically take a classic literary tale and infuse monsters.   The result is hilarious!  The first thing you should know about Dawn of the Dreadfuls is that its not actually a mash-up, its an original tale.

Author Steve Hockensmith takes the reigns on this prequel story arc.  His writing falls right into the classic wordplay of Austen's novels.  This story takes place four years before the events in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as the Bennet sisters are caught up in the trappings of romance, a horror emerges from the grounds at the local parish.  The army of corpses approaches, and Elizabeth Bennet is still concerned about who will steal her heart?!  Well, she'd better be, because those zombies look awfully hungry!  I'm not going to spoil the ins and outs of the tale for you.  This is one you'll want to enjoy page for page.

What happens to classic literature when modern-day monsters attack?   It creates a genre so bizzare and so wonderful that you can't help but be drawn to it.  Dawn of the Dreadfuls is terrifyingly twisted and gut wrenchingly hilarious all in one binding!  I would pre-order this one immediately.  Its only $13!  We cannot recommend this title enough.
