Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: A Quarter Century Celebration Graphic Novel Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: A Quarter Century Celebration Graphic Novel Review

About the Comic: 2009 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Turtles - enjoy this stellar Quarter Century Celebration! Hand picked by Kevin Eastman as "some of his personal all time favorite turtle tales", this 176-page collection not only brings back some of the "classics" of the early years, but Eastman was able to remaster, retouch and with a few very special stories COLOR them for the very first time! 176 Pages, soft cover, 8" x 11"

Our Take: I wish that I could say I was this great comics insider and that I was into the green machine from the old black and white comic days.....but, the fact is that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn't come into my life until 1988.  I was only 9 years old at the time, and the cartoon had just debuted.  It struck a huge cord with me and I've been a fan ever since.  To preface, I'm not an intense TMNT fanboy, but I definately have love for the franchise.

2009 was the 25th Anniversary of the TMNT and Kevin Eastman released this Quarter Century Celebration graphic novel full of re-prints of some of his favorite comics from the early years, back in the 1980s.  If you keep up with Turtles news, Eastman sold his share of the TMNT to co-creator Peter Laird years ago.  Laird just last year sold the entire franchise to Nickelodeon, so the future of the TMNT will be interesting, to say the least.  To have Eastman come back and give us this compilation was quite a treat.

Released by Heavy Metal, the TMNT Quarter Century Celebration features a total of 8 comics, spanning 138 pages.  Eastman has taken the time to color some of these vintage works, and others remain in all of their black and white glory.   The softback book features a nice, sleek design and dynamic cover art.  The back cover is also adorned with classic artwork from the 1990 TMNT movie era.   The graphic novel is a high page quality and the colors that are featured in the book really pop.  The stories are classic TMNT.  Not campy television TMNT..comic book TMNT!

Reading through this book makes me a little sad that Eastman and Laird have sold off all of their rights to the franchise (though Laird retains the right to publish up to 18 Turtles comics a year if he chooses).   Eastman has selected some great works that are definately worth the read and should be a part of any fan's collection!  25 years of TMNT is definately something worth celebrating.  This book retails for around $20, which is an absolute steal.

  2. I love this blog, is really amazing. The turtles are my favorite animal because they are quiet and they never represent a danger for anybody. This is the main reason why i love it.
